The Brief
The Rochester Avionic Archives (RAA), located within BAE System Rochester, aims to preserve a record of the products and generate pride in the people who helped create the company. The archives consist of a large collection of avionic hardware items together with an archive of films, documents, videos, brochures and newspapers.
The brief was to design a website that allowed RAA to put their archives online and allow people to search by platform, object or media. It also was show when a new item was added to the archive and allow people to sign up to the newsletter. Items could also be crossed referenced with each other allowing a comprehensive user experience.
Our Solution
RAA had already created a series of access databases and excel spreadsheets which catalogued a chunk of their collection. Netsite took these files and reworked them into one relational database with a web front end so that people could easily search the archives. The website's admin area allows RAA to add, edit and delete items as well as move them if they have been catalogued in the wrong place.
The system is scalable as RAA are continually adding items and plan to build up the media section of newspapers and videos as soon as time allows. They are also looking into encorporating film and sound clips which will really bring the archives to life.
